A little about Florence + The Machine
The name for Florence and the Machine came about from the collaboration of Florence Welsh and her friend Isabella “Machine” Summers, who performed together for some time under the name of Florence Robot/ Isa Machine. Later this name was shortened to Florence and the Machine.
Florence Welsh was born August 28th, 1986 in London and to a Harvard educated professor mother and an advertising executive father. Growing up in a tragic home life, the experiences had proved to make a massive impact of the singer’s lyrics and music style. Most of her music is attributed to the things that have happened to her in her life.
In 2009, Florence and the Machine released Lungs, their debut album. It became an instant hit in the UK, although it never reached the number one stop on the charts until 6 months after its release.
Lungs is said to be composed of “harps, choirs, drums, elevator shafts, bits of metal, love, death, fireworks, string quartets, stamping, sighing, strange electronic wailing, lambs, lions, sick, broken glass, blood, moon, stars, drink, coffins, teeth, water, wedding dresses.. And the silences in between."
While most of the lyrics on the Lungs album are reminiscent of Gothic images and elements of fantasy, Florence Welch has said that the songs are simple and are about boys, love and pain. She has also stated that the lyrics were influenced by the breakup of her former boyfriend.
While her lyrics might prove to be a bit dark, Florence and the Machine mixes the good harmonies of indie rock and pop and adds an influence baroque stings and harps all the while, keeping an upbeat, soulful sound that projects right through the speakers!
